The values of the coal gas explosion parameters are currently published in the form of the calculations of pure components under standard "atmospheric" conditions. No explosion characteristics of the H2-CH4-CO-C3H8-CO2-N2 and air mixtures measured in 0.02 m3 explosion autoclave have been reported in the literature. The information in the material safety data sheets are given for such complex mixtures using modified Le Chatelier equations. The maximum explosion pressure, pmax, the maximum rate of explosion pressure rise, (dp/dt)max, the deflagration index, KG, lower explosion limit, LEL, upper explosion limit, UEL and limiting oxygen concentration, LOC of coal gas with air mixture at initial temperatures 25 °C, 45 °C, 90 ° C and initial pressure 1 bar, are presented in this paper.

U. S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) a NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) používají kombinaci Marplot a ALOHA. Autoři článku využili a prezentují výsledky odhadů (ocenění) následků scénářů havárií pomocí programů Google Earth Pro a ALOHA. Chceme poukázat na možnost využití zakreslení výpočtů následků scénářů havárií těmito free-ware programy. Tento přístup bere v úvahu rozdíly mezi požadavky USA a EU. I přes určitá omezení, je mnohem jednodušší při použití.

A numerical study was performed on the explosion characteristics of methanol-air mixtures; at four various initial temperatures and initial pressures. The explosion parameters of explosion pressure were calculated. The influences of initial conditions on the explosion characteristics were discussed. With the initial pressure elevated from 1.0 to 2.5 bar, the peak explosion pressure increases significantly. Post explosion species composition as a function of methanol mole fraction in the methanol-air post-explosion mixtures (15 vol. % of fuel) for P = 1.0 bar(a) and T = 298 K have been determined. These values will be used as approximate initial values for explosion experiments carried out in heated 1 m3 and 20 dm3 explosion apparatuses designed by OZM Research s.r.o. and used at Laboratory of safety fuels and technologies, Energy Research Centre, VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava.

The use of liquefied natural gas, methanol, methane and hydrogen as fuels brings up issues regarding safety and acceptable risk. The potential hazards associated with an accidental release and dispersion should be evaluated. The article reports the results of different methods of modelling releases and dispersion of dangerous gases and vapors in cases of major accidents in industrial or urban zones. To describe these methods we introduce how parameters (such as amount of release gas, atmospheric conditions, buildings, tanks cracks, diameter etc.) at an industrial or urban site affect dispersion and show how these parameters can be parametrized in effects models. Effect evaluation is an important part for mitigation factors, such as water sprays, foam systems, and sheltering or evacuation, which tend to reduce the magnitude of potential effects in real incidents. The goal of this article is to present the results of modelling using these standard methods in the area of modelling of releases and dispersions of dangerous chemical substances in urban zones in cases of major accident.

The present work addresses theoretical prediction and experimental determination of explosion characteristics (explosion pressure, maximum explosion pressure, adiabatic explosion pressure). The correlations of experimental data obtained from either from experiment or thermodynamic model are presented. The goal of this article is to show: how the experimental data can be correlated from a uniform point a view through non-dimensionalization, and how the proposed polynomial function can be derived directly from the behavior of dimensionless plots of the experimental data. At the same time, the theoretical study applying on maximum explosion pressure is presented and shows the detail analysis for different input thermodynamic data files. The maximum explosion pressures, computed by assuming chemical equilibrium within the explosion front are examined in comparison with the measured explosion pressures of two gases (CH4 and H2) at atmospheric conditions.

Large quantity of models for pool fire characteristics is available in the literature. In the present work, we implemented different possibilities of heat fraction calculation and we introduced the flame length in order to calculate the point source-target distance. Finally we do not consider the atmospheric stability as constant but we introduced simple mathematical correlation and compare both the model with and without this parameter. The present contribution shows that the Effects model and presented model are almost same based on the heat flux calculation results and therefore that the implementation of the Yellow book model is well done. Nevertheless, from an area of the pool of approximately 5000 m2 there are differences between both models. Those differences are evaluated about 10%. Moreover, it is interesting to evaluate the pool fire behavior according to the nature of the fuel. For the same scenario that is say for the same ambient condition and mass of fuel the variation of the heat of flux as a function to the area of the pool for benzene, gasoline and methanol were shown. The methanol burning is characterized by flame which is not enough visible. We can conclude that more the soot is present when a fuel burn more the heat of flux is affected.

Gas mixture explosions and fires are responsible for most of the largest property loss events worldwide in the chemical and power industry. In this contribution, a theoretical analysis was performed of explosion behavior for CO/O2/N2, CO/O2/N2/H2O and CO/O2/N2/CO2 mixtures. Presented explosions based on real scenarios of accidents associated with transport and storage facilities with flammable chemicals. While explosions of pure flammable chemicals are well described in the literature, the information about explosions of toxic flammable substances is rather scarce. This work aims at studying the explosion behavior of pure mixture and of the inerted carbon monoxide-air mixtures at different initial temperatures and pressures. The results of mathematical modeling of the calculated maximum explosion pressure are presented.

Renewable energies became more and more important in the last years. The production of biogas using agricultural waste and the use of wind and solar energy in combination with water electrolysis is one way to substitute natural gas. Therefore the number of syngas plants is growing very fast. On the other hand, the operation of such plants could be responsible for a significant number of accidents. The main focuses of this contribution are the explosion characteristics and hazards arising from the biogas. Primarily, these are the hazards of fire and explosion induced by flammable components of syngas. However, further hazards are the dangers of asphyxiation and poisoning by gases such as carbon monooxide. These hazards will be the aim of the following article. In order to prevent explosions when storing and handling syngas it is necessary to know the explosion limits of individual gas components and its gas mixtures in mixture with air. However, syngas from gasification unit can vary significantly in its composition. Therefore, for each gas composition the explosion limits would have to be determined. This would require a considerable amount of time and effort. Due to this fact, the explosion limits of syngas are frequently referred to only by the hydrogen fraction of the gas mixture in the safety-relevant literature. In reality as syngas consists of hydrogen, methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and further residual gases the explosion limits are generally over or underestimated.

A theoretical study on maximum explosion pressure is presented. The maximum explosion pressures, computed by assuming chemical equilibrium within the explosion front are examined in comparison with the measured explosion pressures. Comparisons of the experimentally measured pressures with the calculated adiabatic pressures indicate the degree of adiabacity of the explosion. The calculated peak explosion pressures of hydrogen-air mixtures for ambient conditions are examined in comparison with the experimental values and with the calculated adiabatic explosion pressures. In the present contribution we calculated the maximum pressure for hydrogen-air mixtures in a spherical closed volume at different initial temperatures up to 200 °C. The results represents a continuation of numerous efforts by various research groups, where the key underlying problem has been the understanding of results obtained in laboratory tests for predicting the consequences of gas explosion scenarios in industry.

If containment of a flammable liquid is lost and the consequent vapor-air mixture is ignited, estimation of radiation from thermal radiation generated depends upon number of factors. The point source model for the prediction of thermal radiation from liquid pool fires was adopted for the evaluation of the effect distances of Pool Fire we modified the simple point source model for calculation of the effect distances directly from the mass of flammable liquid in Pool Fire. The point source model considers the heat source (i.e. the flame) as a point that emits in all directions. The original model considers the heat received by the observer as a fraction of the heat of combustion multiplied by the burning rate. This heat decreases with the square of the distance from the source and with the transmissivity of the ambient air. In the presented model we implemented different possibilities of heat fraction calculation and we introduced the flame length in order to calculate the point source-target distance. Finally we do not consider the atmospheric stability as s constant but we introduced simple mathematical correlation and compare both the model with and without this parameter. The modified relationship was compared with experimental results and discussion of results is performed.
